1. Turn off Gas or Electricity to Water Heater. If it is electric use your home's circuit breaker to cut power to the water heater. If it is gas locate the gas shut off valve on or near your thermostat, near the bottom of your water heater. Twist the gas shut off valve to the off position. 
2. Turn off the water supply. Locate the water supply valve on the upper right side. If the handle is a lever, turn it 1/4th turn until it stops. If the handle is round, turn it clockwise until it stops.
3. Drain water if necessary to avoid water damage. Hook up a garden hose to the drain valve near the bottom of the unit and let it drain safely to a floor drain. You can also open the temperature and pressure release valve or turn on the hot water on a faucet in your house to speed up the process.
